Two AC source selection solutions are now available on Blue Sea Systems 360 Panel System: rotary switch and lockout slide circuit breakers. AC Source selection is important because many of today’s pleasure boats have multiple AC sources—either or both 120V and 120/240V. There may be one or more shore power sources, and one or more generators. It is necessary to select between these AC sources, and to avoid connecting multiple AC sources simultaneously. Depending on the application, one kind of source selection may be preferable to the other. The relative advantages and limitations of both options are presented below.
Rotary Switch Source Selection
Advantages
- Switch up to 4 sources
- Can switch 120V sources and 120/240V source simultaneously with one switch
- Can supply two separate load groups, such as two panels or two separate circuits
- Compact installation for common voltage and current ratings—fit in one 360 module location
- Intuitive operation—rotate switch from OFF to Source 1 to Source 2 to Source 3
Limitations
- Some large switches require greater depth behind panel, up to 5.5" for high current, multiple position switches
- Requires separate circuit protection
- Can be more expensive than lockout slide circuit breaker source selection when circuit protection is included
Lockout Slide Circuit Breaker Source Selection
Advantages
- Switch up to 3 sources
- Economical—Provides source selection and circuit protection
- Rated up to 100A, 120V per source
Limitations
- Supply AC power to only one load group
- Will only switch either 120V or 240V, but not both simultaneously
- Complex operation when switching 3 sources
